The Broch o' Gurness, Evie, Mainland, Orkney, Scotland

Links to photos

Until 1929 the site of the broch was a grassy mound know as Knowe o' Aikerness. The true nature of the mound was discovered by accident when the leg of a stool sank into the soil, the hole proving to be over a staircase leading down into the settlement. It is thought to have been from about 100-200 BC.
