Doune Castle, Scotland, Scotland Doune Castle was built in the late 14th century for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and Earl of Menteith and Fife through marriage to Margaret, Countess of Menteith. He was the third son of King Robert II. In 1388 he became effective King of Scotland. In 1424 Robert Stewart's son, Murdoch, became king until 1424 when James I returned from exile. The Earls of Moray retained possession of the castle until the 20th Earl of Moray placed it in the care of the state. Historic Scotland now has stewardship of the castle.
