Doune Castle was built in the late 14th century for Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, and Earl of Menteith and Fife through marriage to Margaret, Countess of Menteith. He was the third son of King Robert II. In 1388 he became effective King of Scotland.

In 1424 Robert Stewart's son, Murdoch, became king until 1424 when James I returned from exile. At this time it became a royal retreat and hunting lodge.

In 1570 Sir James Stewart, the first Lord Doune, later adding Earl of Moray to his titles through marriage, gained possession of the castle. The Earls of Moray retained possession of the castle until the 20th Earl of Moray placed it in the care of the state. Historic Scotland now has stewardship of the castle.

The was the caste used in the film "Monty Python and the Ho;y Grail"
