Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Hasties Swamp National Park

What's special?

On the Atherton Tableland, Hasties Swamp National Park protects a wetland which is a valuable refuge for waterbirds. Local and migratory birds visit this swamp.

Only a few patches of the original open eucalypt woodland remain, a striking contrast to the lush rainforests found elsewhere on the tableland. The eucalypt forest remnant occurs on the change from basaltic to granitic soils

Exploring Hasties

Go birdwatching from a large bird hide at the edge of the swamp. See plumed whistling ducks, brolgas and magpie geese.

Have a bush picnic. Camping is not allowed but you can stay nearby at Atherton or camp at Danbulla State Forest.

Accessibility

The toilets and bird hide are wheelchair-accessible.

Getting there

Hasties Swamp is just south of Atherton. Head along the Atherton-Herberton Road then turn left into Hasties Road and right into Kool Road.
