A biography of the Australian continent 

The Merlinleigh Sandstone

This Late Eocene deposit in the Carnarvon Basin contains silicified wood and a Banksia cone that closely resembles living species. The presence of this cone suggests that the structure of the cone preadapted the plant to survive the fires that occurred in later, drier,  times.
