Musgravian Orogeny
This orogenic event occurred about 1320-1150 Ma. Magnetic granitoids
within basement, that is less magnetic, trends predominantly northeast,
being continuous beneath the
Officer
and Amadeus
Basins. It defines an orogenic belt connecting provinces of
Mesoproterozoic age. A direct east-trending connection between the
Musgrave Province and the contemporaneous orogens of Laurentia is
precluded by the truncation of the orogenic belt within Australia. The
authors suggest the South Australian Craton rotated clockwise,
subsequently colliding with the North Australian and West Australian
Cratons as an explanation of the architecture of Grenville age seen in
Australia.
