Some time between 250 & 200 BC the Parisii tribe of Celts settled in the present site of Paris, possibly establishing a fishing village on an island in the Seine now called Ile de la Cité, though there are other suggestions of where this first settlement was located. The ancient name of this settlement was Lutetia (Lutece). In 52 BC Julius Caesar conquered the settlement and the area around it, bringing it under Roman control. In 987 the Count of Paris, Hugh Capet, became king of France. It became the capital of France under the Capetians, his successors.
