Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Ardrossan

Ardrossan, Scotland

Ardrossan began with the construction of its castle by Simon de Morville in about 1140. In 1292 it was taken by the English army. In 1296 it was the scene of what became known as Wallace's Larder. William Wallace set fire to part of the town to lure the English garrison out then slaughtered them and threw their bodies into the castle's dungeon.

In 1648 Cromwell took the castle then had it destroyed, taking the resulting stones to Ayr to build the fort. The ruins are now overgrown.
