Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Arumberra Sandstone

A 600 million year old deposit of red sandstone found near Alice Springs, Northern Territory, its full thickness if visible along Ellery Creek. It was formed at the bottom of a shallow, calm sea. Australia was on the equator at this time. It contains many fossils, jelly fish, burrowing worms, brachiopods (lamp shells) and ancestral oysters and clams. In the sequence at Ellery Creek, it was situated between the limestone of the Julie Formation, and the shale sequence to the south.
