The tehn Palace of the Yards,  was originally built in the 1150s for Bishop William the Old. In 1263 King Hakon IV stayed here for a while after his defeat by Alexander II at Largs. He died here 15 December 1263 at midnight. He was buried across the present day road at St Magnus' Cathedral. When the weather improved enough he was moved to Bergen. In the 1540s it was rebuilt by Bishop Robert Reid. In 1568 Earl Robert Stewart acquired it, it is said, by a suggestion that it would be good for the Bishop's health if he handed it over.
