Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

China Wall

300 million years ago silica was precipitated into cracks into more ancient sandstone. The sandstone was exposed when it was uplifted with the Kimberley Block and later exposed as the surrounding sandstone was eroded away. The vein of white quartz is now the oldest exposed quartz veins in Australia, standing erect above the folded hills and for a total distance of tens of kilometres. The best section occurs above a creek 6 km from Halls Creek. The white colour and the block-like structure makes it look like a smaller version of the Great Wall of China, hence its name.
