The cathedral was originally built by the Vikings in the 1030s. Bishop Patrick introduced the Benedictines, who remained during the time of  the first 2 successors, the third successor brought in the Augustinians. There they remained until the Reformation. At this time the constitution of the Cathedral changed to reinstate the :old foundation' style of St Patrick - a secular cathedral with dean and chapter.
