Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Coloured dinosaurs

These feathered dinosaurs have been found in a good enough state of preservation in the Liaoning deposits to study the melanosomes of the feathers. Comparing the melanosomes of the fossil feathers with those of birds it has been possible to map out the colour the extinct bird had in life. It's beginning to look like the Mesozoic was a colourful time, though the victims no doubt failed to appreciate the beauty of the rainbow-coloured feathered theropods.

Anchiornis huxleyi 'near-bird' Mid-Late Jurassic Troodontidae Dinodata Colours. Named after Thomas Huxley, the first to propose a relationship between dinosaurs and birds.
