Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Eighty Mile Beach

The very flat white sand of Eighty Mile Beach formed when the water was lower, thousands of years ago. Because of the shallow slope of this beach, the tides, up to 8.5 m, rise and fall rapidly. At high tide it looks like any other, but at low tide the ocean can barely be seen as a band on the horizon at the far end of the vast expanse of glistening white sand. Inland from the beach is the Great Sandy desert.
