St Mungo, aka Kentigern, is credited with the founding of Glasgow. Mungo established a church here. He was the Archbishop of the Kingdom of Strathclyde by AD 600. Even then the Kings of Strathclyde didn't live in the town, the stayed at the more easily defensible Dumbarton Castle. It is sais the name Glasgow came from Mungo's description of the community that grew up around the church as "dear friends" "Glas-gu". Glasgow remained an important ecclesiastical centre until the Reformation in 1560.
