The Glasgow Necropolis is on the site of a block of land on the hill purchased by the Merchants' House, a group of Glasgow merchants, in 1651, which was later planted with fir trees, hence its name, Fir Park. In 1651 the Merchants' House decided to emulate Paris' Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Which was no doubt a profitable move.
