Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Helmsdale, Scotland

Helmsdale, Scotland More photos

Helmsdale has been at its present location since before Helmsdale castle was built in 1588. The castle is famous as the place where the Earl of Sutherland was poisoned by his aunt, Isobel Sinclair, in 1567. His death made way for her son to become Earl. It did her no good because her son also drank the poison accidentally and died. By 1800 the castle was in ruins and in the 1970s the remains were destroyed by the roadworks on the A9.
