Inverness, at the north end of the Great Glen, where the River Ness enters the Moray Firth,  is the capital of the highlands. By the 5 th century the Pictish Kings had a fort on the western bank on a crag now called Craig Phadrig. It was the capital of the kingdom. From here they could control the travel to and from the highlands.
