Until 2006 Edinburgh had 2 museums side by side, The Museum of Scotland and the Royal Museum. In 2006 they were combined into the National Museum of Scotland. The Royal Museum has stood on its present site on Chambers Street since its construction in 1861. The Museum of Scotland was constructed next door in 1998.
