Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Other West Australian Plant Fossil Sites

Eocene fossils are found at Lake Cowan, near Norseman, near Coolgardie and at Deakin Swamp. Found at these sites are many ferns and tree-ferns, Nothofagus, Banksia, Araucaria, Podocarpus, Nypa, a tropical mangrove palm, mangroves, and many other plants. The plant material in these sites is solidly layered. A more recent find was a deposit containing a fossil flora at Westdale on the eastern Darling Range. This lake deposit has well-preserved plants.
