Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Protarchaeopteryx robusta 'robust first wing' Caudipterygidae Early Cretaceous, Sihetun Region, Baipiao, Liaoning Province, China

It was about 60 cm long and had symmetrical feathers with advanced branching on its arms as is seen in modern birds. Long branched feathers were found with the main fossil that are believed to possibly be tail feathers that appear similar to those of Caudipteryx. It was similar to Incisivosaurus in having a few teeth in the front of the upper jaw only. Some believe that the 2 species should be in the same genus. It has been suggested it may have eaten insects and plants around the Liaoning lake system.
