SINGAPORE

Singapore was known by a number of  names in the centuries before the British decided to form a settlement there to protect their trade routs with China and to stop the spread of the Dutch East Indies. In 1819 Sir Stamford Raffles was sent to found the type of settlement they needed, the Island was given the name Singapore - Lion island, one of the names it was known by in earlier times. He made it a free trade port, a status which governments since independence continued, which has led to its present status as the world's busiest port.
