Trevi Fountain (Fontana
di Trevi)
Situated in the Piazza Fontana di Trevi, It is the largest and most detailed of the Baroque fountains in Rome. It is the termnal point of one of the aquaducts supplying ancient Rome, the Aqua Virgo (Acqua Virgine). According to legend, in 19 BC Roman technicians located the water source 22 km from the city. They were said to have been helped by a virgin, hence the name. In ancient Rome the Baths of Agrippa were built at the end point of the aquaduct. When the Goths beseiged Rome they broke the aquaducts. In 1453 Pope Nicholas V had the repairs to the aquaduct completed and a basin was placed to receive the water as it arrived in the City. In the 17 th and 18 th centuries it was moved to the opposite side of the square so the pope could see it from the Quirinal Palace, and built and then rebuilt as the present structure. It was finally finished in 1762. Also in this Piazza is one of the longest operating pharmacies in Europe. It was opened in 1552 and is still a pharmacy and has a wall that still has the 16 th century shelves and containers. The oldest pharmacy in Europe, the Esteva Pharmacy, in the town of Livia, in a Catalan enclave in France, was opened only in the 15 th century, but it has been closed since 1942 and is now a museum.
