Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Triassic Marine reptiles of Australia

There is very little evidence of marine reptiles known from Australia during the Triassic. The only evidence of possible marine reptiles being present in Australia during the Triassic is a few bone fragments dating from the Induan-Olenekian from the Blina Shale, Western Australia, that have tentatively been attributed to an ichthyosaur. It is difficult to assess the veracity of the bone fragments being attributed to an ichthyosaur, as the specimens have not been described fully or figured, until further evidence comes to light, it seems that Australia differs from the rest of the world where ichthyosaurs are known from the Triassic to the Cretaceous.
