Wanlockhead situated in the Lowther Hills is the highest village in Scotland. It ows its existance to the mining of lead and gold.. It is thought it was worked by the Romans. After 1200 it was worked intermittently by groups of miners in the summer. About 1680 the Duke of Buccleuch built a lead smelter and cottages for the workers to allow a permanent workforce to work the mines.
