Cadzow Castle, Scotland Kings of ancient Strathclyde are believed to have had a hunting lodge at Cadzow. The original Cadzow castle was built in the 12 th century for David I. David I is known to have issued royal charters from this castle in 1139. It is thought that this castle was situated on a different site, possibly at Castle Hill, which is now covered by a housing estate. In 1222 the castle passed to the Comyns Robert the Bruce gave the land to Walter Fitzgilbert de Hambledon early in the 14 th century. He became the first Baron Cadzow. His descendents are the Dukes of Hamilton. Starting about 1530, the castle was rebuilt by James Hamilton of Finnart. In 1568 Mary Queen of Scots stayed here after her escape from Loch Levan Castle. In the late 16 th century it was destroyed by the crown. In the 18 th century it was partially rebuilt.
