Australia: The Land Where Time Began |
||||||||||||||
Eromanga Sea This vast epicontinental sea reached its peak between 115 and 110 million years ago, when all the interconnected continental basins were covered by it, dry land being restricted to 4 islands. This sea covered Eromanga Basin in Western Queensland, adjacent New South Wales, the Northern Territory, South Australia, and an arm of the sea extended in eastern parts of Western Australia. At this time the drainage patterns on the pre-Cretaceous surface were obliterated and the only patterns now visible on satellite photos are those on the 4 remaining blocks of land. The pattern on these blocks tends to be radial, the water finding its way to the nearest surrounding sea. Mary E White, Running Down, Water in a Changing Land, Kangaroo Press, 2000
