In 1670 Louis XIV bought a hamlet on the outskirts of Versailles called Trianon. He had the hamlet demolished and the The Grand Trianon built on it's site. It was designed to be a place where Louis and his mistress Françoise-Athénaïs de Mortemart, the Marquise de Montespan, could escape from the hectic life at court in the Chateau of Versailles. It was originally built of porcelain but by 1687 Louis decided he wanted a stronger building material so he had it demolished and replaced with a marble building twice the size of the porcelain building.
