Leadhills, Scotland
Lead has been mined in the area prior to 1741 when the Leadhills Reading Society, thought to be the oldest subscription in Britain. 23 miners built the Reading Society building that catered to the reading needs of Leadhills and Wanlockhead and the areas around them.
