It is in the town of Linlithgow, 15 miles from Edinburgh.

In the 12 th century there was a royal manor on the site

In the 14 th century Edward I built "The Peel", a fortification here. The situation of the manor was well placed to protect supply lines between Edinburgh and Stirling Castles.

In 1424 part of Linlithgow town was destroyed in a fire.King James I started rebuilding the Palace. During the following century the Palace was improved and expanded by James III, James IV and James V. in April 1512 James V was born in the Palace. In December 1542 Mary Queen of Scots was born in the palace. The palace was not used much after the union of Scotland and England in  1603.

In September 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie called in on his way south.

In January 1746 the Duke of Cumberland's army destroyed most of the palace buildings by fire.
