A biography of the Australian continent

Loch Lomond, Scotland

In 1263 the Vikings, led by King Haakon of Norway, carried their longships across the 1 1/2 miles of the isthmus separating Arrochar from Loch Long to Tarbet and sailed from there to attack the unprepared towns surrounding the Loch, then down the River Leven to the sea where they were met by the rest of their fleet. Their success didn't last long, before they could make it home with their loot a south-westerly gale drove the fleet aground at Largs. When a Scottish army led by King Alexander III arrived they eventually withdrew to their ships after some fighting and returned home.
