Mamertinum, Rome, Italy

According to one legend this was a prison that held St Peter and St Paul until some Christian converts among the prisoners helped them escape. It had 2 parts in the caves under the Capitoline Hill. Many enemies of Rome were imprisoned here. The lower part, named Tullianum, was built in 387 BC. It was originally a water reservoir (tullus). The upper part was built in the 2 nd century BC.
