Mount Sonder was named by Ferdinand Von Mueller. The Aboriginal name for Mount Sonder is 'Rutjipma'. : Mount Sonder rises 1380 metres above sea level and is the fourth highest mountain in the NT.
Those who make the climb to the top will be rewarded with excellent views of the Finke River and its tributaries. This walk is 16km in length and 8 hours is needed to complete the walk. The walk begins and ends at the Redbank Gorge carpark which is located at the base of Mount Sonder. This day walk is stage 12 of the Larapinta trail, and detailed brochures are available from the Parks and Wildlife Commission Alice Springs office and West MacDonnell National Park Ranger Stations. :
Amenities: Picnic and Camping facilities are located at Redbank Gorge. Comprising of gas and wood barbeques, park furniture, shade shelters and pit toilets. Drinking water is not provided at this site.
