Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Mt Elephant - Victoria

Situated near Derrinallum, Victoria. It is a steep-sided scoria cone that formed about 20,000 years ago. At 240 m above the surrounding plain it is one of the highest volcanoes in Victoria. The area surrounding Mt Elephant consists of basalt from numerous lava flows from many vents, with stony rises of basalt. The many lakes in the area were formed when the old creeks were dammed by the lava flows.
