St Peter's Church, Munich Prior to the founding of the city of Munich in 1158 a pre-Merovingian church had stood on the site since the 8th century. On a hill called Petersbergl, monks lived around the church. A Bavarian Romanesque style church was built there at the end of the 12th century. It was expanded in the Gothic style shortly before the building was destroyed by the great fire of 1327. The church was reconstructed and re-dedicated in 1368; The 92 m spire had its renaissance steeple top added, and a new Baroque choir was added.
