Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Tookoonooka Crater (astrobleme)

This an impact crater, between 55 and 66 km wide, that that occurred about 123-133 Ma or 115-112 Ma, is buried beneath the surface, in sedimentary rocks of the Eromanga Sea in southwestern Queensland. It is not visible from the surface, only being found when seismic exploration was carried out in the area. It was confirmed as an impact crater when shocked quartz was found in drill cores from the area. The impact occurred in the Cretaceous when the Cadna-owie Formation was being deposited.

A nearby structure called Talundilly is believed to be the other part of a paired impact.
