Tower of London, England When William the Conquerer was crowned king of England one of the forts he built was on the north bank of the Thames near the Roman Wall. In 1078 he had this fort replaced by the stone stronghold that he named the Tower of London. In about 1240 King Henry III greatly expanded the area around the original tower that was then called the Tower of London, the original fort being renamed the White Tower.
