Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Mount William

Mount William was not only the site of a vast eel industry, easily on the scale of an engineering project, but they were also the centre of stone mining for axe heads.

There was also an axe stone quarry on the southeastern slopes of Mount William, Near Lancefield.

Mount William was an important centre of trade at the time of European settlement, people from surrounding tribes from hundreds of kilometres away coming to trade for the axes, and smoked eels. Some of the trade that is known of is reed spear shafts from Swan Hill district on the Murray, 300 km away and sandstone from St Kilda 160 km away. Sandstone was used for grinding axes.
