Australia: The Land Where Time Began

A biography of the Australian continent

Lake Barlee - A salina

This is one of the normally dry playas in Western Australia, on the Yilgarn Block. As with the other playas of the area it can fill after heavy rain delivered by cyclones that have crossed the West Australian coast and degenerated into rain depressions. One of the years it filled was in 1992. It is one of the lakes that is a dry salt lake for most of the time, but when it fills with floodwater it becomes one of the breeding lakes for the banded stilts that require flooded salt lakes to breed.
